Maintain responsibility for identifying, developing, promoting and implementing new and emerging technologies.
Provide mentoring expertise and guidance to Olympus Engineers, Marketing, Manufacturing, and Management.
Proven author of publications, communication, and patent/trade secrets.
Delivers technical expertise from concept through production Individual must be a subject matter expert in the design and development of state-of-the-art product and process technologies.
Lead technical reviews.
Maintain full understanding of the intellectual property that exists relating to his/her area of expertise.
Research and work with Surgeons & Upstream Marketing to identify clinical needs that can be potentially converted into business opportunities.
Determine the medical value of the opportunity by building an understanding of the Anatomy of interest, Pathophysiology, Epidemiology, risk factors, and current treatment & procedure methods.
Collaborate with upstream marketing to filter and down select clinical needs using business sense and time-to-market rationale while being mindful of business risks.
Prepare presentations and appropriate documentation toward gaining project justification and funding from the executive team.
Develop engineering solutions, investigate competing technologies, research the patent landscape, and protect engineering solutions by filing invention disclosures.
Develop and evaluate prototype solutions on animal and cadaver tissue.
Lead, facilitate, manage, or support clinical trials.
Partner with marketing to research and identify surgeons with appropriate backgrounds to help shape technology of interest.
Generate methods to seek formal inputs.
Develop treatment procedures by researching supporting technologies; research technology providers with the intent of forging relationships; and collaborate with surgeons to develop procedures using bench top, animals, and/or cadavers.
Possess working knowledge of information needed for FDA clearance & approvals, CE Mark certification, and Reimbursement.
Develop and maintain strong understanding of innovation techniques and entrepreneur-like accomplishments.
Be conversant with all aspects of product development activities, such as prototyping, verification testing, design validation studies; risk documentation, design reviews, and documentation compilation for regulatory requirements.
Serve as a technical consultant for all of Olympus.
Perform all other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or the equivalent in years of industry experience.
Minimum years of related experience: 14 years with Bachelor's Degree; or 10 years with Master's Degree; or 8 years with PhD.
History of innovative accomplishments in manufacturing, development, and research.
Patent awards, IDF submissions, and company recognition for out-standing innovative work.
Possession of an innovation vision (defined as the ability to spot an opportunity, dream-up a solution, and convert into a product).
Comfortable in navigating through Research, TDP, and exploratory requirements.
Excellent written and verbal communication, and leadership skills, particularly the ability to work with others and make them better.
Experience in statistical analysis package (Stat Ease, Minitab).
Proficient with the creation and critical review of engineering drawing and specification documentation.
Proficient in Geometric dimensioning and tolerance.
Must have working knowledge of FDA requirements, including 820CFR, ISO14971, IEC60601, GMP and other standards as they relate to the design and manufacture of medical devices.
Proficient in Microsoft Windows environment, Outlook, excel, MS project, 3D CAD/CAM software.
Able to solve complex problems and provide guidance to other engineers.
Able to work with ambiguity and uses good judgement in making decisions.
Ability to balance risk and opportunities.
Able to collaborate effectively with all levels, works well within cross-functional teams and across multiple sites, as applicable.

A Technical Fellow is recognized as an expert in the appropriate technology or medical field within all of Olympus. The Technical Fellow is directly responsible for identifying and developing new technologies and business opportunities, through innovation and ingenuity using a diverse technical background. Following research and development of the technology, the incumbent is the company expert/consultant in all aspects of the procedure that utilizes the new technology. The position responsibility includes identifying clinical needs through research, procedure observations, and Surgeon and Upstream Marketing interactions; converting clinical needs into value opportunities; gaining project approval and funding from the executive team; performing advanced research; filing inventions; proving technical solutions through appropriately designed clinical studies; seeking customer inputs and incorporating them into the new technology; and supporting technology transfer to PDP teams. In addition, the Technical Fellow will support aspects of Discovery, TRP, TDP, and PDP projects by acting as a consultant or expert in specific areas of such projects.
