Olympus America Inc. Principal Optical Engineer in Southborough, Massachusetts

Job Duties::

As a Title working on the XXXX team, you will be empowered and inspired to do your best work. You will contribute to our mission by XXX, XXX and XXX. In a typical day, you will:

  • Project leader on Exploratory, Discovery, TRP and TDP Projects.

  • Maintain responsibility for product development activities, such as prototyping, verification testing, authors protocols and reports, design validation studies; supporting risk management, leading design reviews, and providing technical documentation to support regulatory submissions.

  • Develop engineering solutions, investigate competing technologies, research the patent landscape, and protect engineering solutions by filing invention disclosures.

  • Maintain responsibility for planning, scheduling, and executing all assigned projects.

  • Consult with the Sales, Marketing, and clinicians to facilitate proper design of new or modified products.

  • Manage, direct and support vendors involved in product development and ongoing production.

  • Help prepare and act as a consultant to marketing on technical brochures, training programs, and technical presentations to customers and the sales force.

  • Conduct testing and collect the necessary product data.

  • Work directly with Marketing to define and specify new product user requirements, design inputs for medical devices.

  • Design various aspects of medical devices with a focus on design for manufacturability, ergonomics and COGS.

  • Develop product verification and validation testing requirements, testing protocols and testing reports to ensure products meet specification.

  • Act as a consultant, as needed, to other departments, customers, Sales and Marketing.

  • Investigate and solve critical production product/process problems on demand.

  • Perform design analysis, e.g. tolerance stack-ups, strength of materials (factor of safety), FEA risk analysis, etc. required for new and existing products.

  • Perform all other essential duties as assigned.

Job Requirements::


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or the equivalent in years of industry experience.

  • Minimum of 9 years of related experience; OR, minimum of 8 years with a Master's Degree; OR, minimum of 5 years with a PhD.

  • Minimum of 6 years engineering and developing optical products such as spectroscopes and pulsed lasers.


  • Experience in statistical analysis package (Stat Ease, Minitab).

  • Proficiency with the creation and critical review of engineering drawing and specification documentation.

  • Proficiency in geometric dimensioning and tolerance Proficient in Microsoft Windows environment, Outlook, excel, MS project, 3D CAD/CAM software.

  • Ability to solve complex problems and provide guidance to other engineers.

  • Ability to work with ambiguity and use good judgement in making decisions.

  • Ability to balance risk and opportunities.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with others, works well within cross-functional teams and across multiple sites, as applicable.

  • Ability to manage resources and drives for results, effectively managing projects and timelines.

  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels, both verbally and in writing.

  • Strong presentation skills and the ability influence. Inspires and motivates others and provides work direction.

  • Experience designing optical coupling systems for high-power lasers is preferred.

  • Experience developing spectroscopy products is strongly preferred.

The Principal Optical Engineer is responsible for performing or leading all aspects of optical system product development including technical planning, device integration, verification and validation. The primary responsibilities of the position are defining product specifications, design inputs, product design, verification testing and supporting design validation studies. Other activities include evaluating alternatives including cost and risk, supportability and analyses for total device. He/She must fully understand design control requirements and be able to effectively manage an optical product development project and work effectively in a cross functional team. The incumbent may serve as a core or extended team member on optically focused PRP/NPD projects. He/She conducts feasibility studies of the design to determine ability to function as intended. The Principal Optical Engineer maintains detailed documentation throughout all phases of research and development. He/She may provide leadership and direction to Engineering Technicians and mentor less experienced engineers within and across OSTA sites in best practices for the use of engineering tools and methods.
