Job Requirements::

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering or Science, PhD preferred.

  • Minimum years of experience required: 12 years with Master's Degree; or 8 years with PhD.

  • Minimum of 6 years of researching or developing high power pulsed lasers, and spectrometers or related optical technology.

  • Ability to travel globally up to 20% of the time.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with, and provide work direction for cross-functional team members of all experience levels.

  • Experience with successful publications in peer-reviewed journals, and patent awards.

  • Experience conducting research and exploring, assessing, and developing technologies for commercialization.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication, and presentation skills for audiences of all experience and knowledge levels.

  • Ability to establish a laboratory suitable for developing high-power laser system modules, optical delivery fibers, and spectrometer modules. Including identifying and procuring the necessary test equipment and tools.

  • Experience in statistical analysis packages (Stat Ease, Minitab).

  • Ability to solve complex problems and provide clear, actionable guidance to others. Must be able to work with ambiguity and use good judgement in making decisions.

  • Ability to balance risk and opportunities.

  • Ability to be able to manage resources and drives for results, effectively managing projects and timelines.

  • Experience designing, developing, and optimizing spectrometers. Experience designing, developing, and optimizing high-power pulsed lasers and their optical coupling systems.

  • Ability to develop prototype laser system modules and spectrometer modules for in-house and lab testing.

  • Working knowledge of measuring spatial and temporal optical intensity distributions of pulsed lasers.

Job Duties::

  • Collaborate effectively with and provide mentoring expertise and guidance to R&D team members and cross functional team members.

  • Maintain responsibility for monitoring and identifying emerging laser systems, delivery systems, and spectroscopy technologies relevant to our procedure domains.

  • Serve a technology expert for R&D and the company in the research, design, and development of state-of-the-art laser and optical products and processes.

  • Author of abstracts, journal publications, and other communications.

  • Develop solutions, investigate competing technologies, and protect solutions by filing invention disclosures, patent applications, and documenting trade secrets.

  • Collaborate with the Intellectual Property department to maintain understanding of high power laser and spectroscopy patent landscape.

  • Collaborate with physicians, R&D, and Marketing to identify user needs.

  • Contribute to estimating the clinical value of the opportunity by building an understanding of the anatomy of interest, pathophysiology, epidemiology, risk factors, and current treatment & procedure methods.

  • Prepare presentations and appropriate documentation to justify funding proposed projects.

  • Develop test methods and evaluate solutions on animal and cadaver tissue as necessary.

  • Support all aspects of product development, including prototyping, verification testing, design validation studies; risk documentation, design reviews, and compiling documentation for regulatory submissions.

  • Establish and maintain a fully functional laser technology and spectroscopy development prototype lab.

  • Establish and maintain relationships with laser and optical component suppliers.

  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

A Senior Principal Optical Scientist is recognized as an expert in the science of high power therapeutic laser and laser spectroscopy technology. The incumbent is directly responsible for identifying and collaborating with the rest of the R&D department to demonstrate the feasibility of laser systems for new clinical applications. This includes identifying clinical needs through research, procedure observations, and interactions with physicians and Marketing, performing research, filing inventions, demonstrating the feasibility technical solutions, seeking customer feedback, and supporting technology transfer to product development teams. He/She is also expected to create reports and conduct presentations to the R&D team and wider corporate audiences that summarizes their research findings and feasibility bench test results pursuant to realizing solutions to clinical needs. Additionally, they foster R&D’s fundamental laser and optical technology competency development through mentorship and active training of team members.
